PM Üstel meets union leaders, stresses protection of rights

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has delivered key messages on the economy and workers’ rights during a meeting with union leaders held yesterday at the Republic’s Assembly.

Üstel, who outlined the government’s response to mounting global economic pressures, said the measures taken were not arbitrary but shaped by global developments, adding that the government’s determination to protect workers’ rights is non-negotiable.

He underlined that the administration continues to closely monitor and manage the economic challenges.

Üstel emphasised that the government would not compromise on employees’ rights, stating that freezing the cost-of-living allowance is not on the agenda and that their commitment to social justice remains clear.

He noted that even in the most difficult periods, the government has taken responsibility and will continue to do so, highlighting that necessary steps have consistently been implemented during times of crisis.

Recalling measures taken to ease the financial burden on citizens, Üstel said fuel prices had been kept stable for a long period despite the removal of funds and VAT and the elimination of fuel taxes, although a recent increase had become unavoidable.

He pointed out that the state had made significant sacrifices, including an estimated revenue loss of around ₺100m within just two weeks, to support the public, while continuing to provide cost-of-living allowances to protect purchasing power.

Touching on compulsory retirement, Üstel stated that the government is open to dialogue if there are concerns, assuring that no one will be victimised and that all necessary steps will be taken to safeguard pensioners’ rights.

He added that feedback is being taken into account and that legal adjustments can be made if required, stressing that decisions are being shaped cautiously amid ongoing global uncertainty.
