PM Üstel: TRNC will firmly defend its sovereign rights

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel also issued a statement regarding the developments in the Çayhan Düzü area.

In his statement, the Prime Minister said, “The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will continue to take all necessary measures with determination when it comes to its borders, sovereign rights, and the security of its citizens.”

Üstel noted that the recent developments in the Çayhan Düzü area—located within the country’s borders and where the public carries out agricultural and livestock activities – were being followed with great care and sensitivity.

Stating that authorities of the Greek Cypriot administration attempted illegal crossings into the area under the pretext of the foot-and-mouth disease seen on the Greek Cypriot side, Prime Minister Üstel said, “Our security units immediately took the necessary measures against these attempts and brought the situation on the ground under control.”

“In line with information received regarding a possible similar attempt on April 15, 2026, all our relevant units acted in coordination, and the necessary measures were implemented in a timely and effective manner. During this process, following contacts carried out with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force and the commitments made, the measures in the Çayhan Düzü area were gradually eased in a controlled manner. The fact that no incidents or military activity occurred throughout these developments is a result of the prudent approach and effective coordination of our security units,” he said.

“The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will continue to take all necessary measures with determination when it comes to its borders, sovereign rights, and the security of its citizens. At the same time, preserving peace, stability, and calm in our region remains our top priority. We will continue to closely monitor the process and take all necessary steps with the same determination to ensure the peace and security of our people,” the Premier added.
