MFA says Türkiye’s intervention brought peace to Cyprus

The Foreign Ministry has strongly rejected and condemned a statement issued by the Greek Cypriot Administration regarding May 19, accusing it of distorting historical facts and ignoring the suffering endured by the Turkish Cypriot people.

In its statement, the Foreign Ministry said the Greek Cypriot Administration was attempting to exploit baseless allegations for political propaganda while disregarding the atrocities suffered by Turkish Cypriots between 1963 and 1974.

The Ministry stated that the Turkish Cypriot people had been subjected to systematic attacks, forced displacement and massacres by EOKA and the Greek junta mentality during that period.

It stressed that guarantor Türkiye exercised its legal rights arising from the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee and Alliance in order to ensure the safety of Turkish Cypriots and prevent the Enosis coup.

According to the statement, Türkiye’s intervention stopped the bloodshed and violence caused by the Greek Cypriot side and restored peace across the island.

The Ministry also said allegations describing Türkiye as an “occupying force” were incompatible with historical and legal realities.

Calling on the Greek Cypriot Administration to abandon hate speech and unfounded accusations, the statement urged efforts to promote good neighbourly relations between the two sovereign equal states on the island.
