Turkish Cypriot-origin MP Nesil Çalışkan appointed as UK Minister of State
There has been a cabinet reshuffle in the United Kingdom.
As part of the restructuring, Labour Party MP of Turkish Cypriot origin Nesil Çalışkan has been appointed as a Minister of State.
In the UK, politicians who carry out various duties within the responsibility areas of ministries are referred to as “Ministers of State.”
These roles, which are also equivalent to deputy minister positions, are selected by the Prime Minister, while the appointments require the approval of the King.
King Charles III approved the new appointments, replacing the ministers of state who resigned after Prime Minister Keir Starmer called on them to step down.
Among those appointed to the new cabinet was MP Nesil Çalışkan, who is of Turkish Cypriot origin.
Barking MP Nesil Çalışkan was appointed as one of the Ministers of State at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
It has not yet been announced which responsibilities Çalışkan will undertake.

Born in London in 1988 to a Turkish Cypriot family, Çalışkan previously served as mayor of the London Borough of Enfield.
She became the youngest woman to hold the position when she was elected mayor at the age of 29.
