General strike suspended after Parliament session cancelled
Trade unions that had launched a general strike have announced the suspension of today’s planned action after it was confirmed that the Republic’s Assembly would not convene.
All unions involved in the strike announced that the general strike, which had been set to continue today, has been suspended following the decision not to open the General Assembly of the TRNC parliament.
In a message sent to their members this morning, unions stated that Parliament would not meet today and that the cost-of-living draft law would not be discussed.
As a result of this development, unions declared that the strike had been put on hold.
Burak Maviş, Secretary General of the Cyprus Turkish Teachers’ Trade Union, also confirmed the decision, stating that the strike and planned actions announced yesterday in schools and organised workplaces have been suspended in light of the latest developments.
He added that schools are open today and that teachers and public sector employees have returned to their duties.
