Stating that the UN Secretary-General is gradually launching initiatives related to an anticipated new Cyprus process, Erhürman said they are ready to engage in talks in line with the goodwill and the Turkish Cypriot people’s will for a solution.

The President also called for managing expectations realistically, stressing that they would refrain from unnecessary statements while remaining committed to dialogue and diplomacy.

President Tufan Erhürman has announced that United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres’ Personal Envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar, will arrive on the island in one week.

In a statement shared on social media, Erhürman noted that elections in South Cyprus have been completed and that the Republic of Cyprus’ term holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union will soon come to an end.

He said that the UN Secretary-General is gradually initiating efforts related to the long-anticipated new Cyprus initiative.

Reaffirming his commitment to dialogue, Erhürman stated that they are prepared to engage in discussions in good faith, guided by the Turkish Cypriot people’s desire for a settlement and within the framework of the principles and approaches they have consistently advocated for a long time.

In his statement, Erhürman said: “Ms. Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, will be on the island next week. Elections in the South have taken place, and the EU Presidency term will soon conclude. The Secretary-General is gradually launching initiatives related to the expected new process. Statements have recently been made from both sides of the island. We are ready to engage in talks in good faith and in line with our people’s will for a solution, based on the principles and approaches we have long defended.”

He emphasized that it would be wrong either to raise expectations excessively or to attempt to undermine the process before it even begins.

Erhürman stressed that resolving the problems on the island and in the wider region is the only path toward lasting peace and stability that benefits everyone, adding that dialogue and diplomacy remain the sole means of achieving this goal.

He also said that his administration would approach the process with patience, composure, seriousness, and determination, avoiding unnecessary statements while ensuring that the public is accurately informed.

Concluding his remarks, Erhürman stated that they favour dialogue and diplomacy aimed at solving problems rather than creating or escalating them.
