President Erhürman calls for lessons, dialogue and non-violence after tensions

President Tufan Erhürman has stated that effective crisis management is impossible without trust, calling on all sides to draw lessons from the tensions and incidents that unfolded yesterday during protests linked to economic measures and the cost-of-living debate.

President Tufan Erhürman issued a statement following the developments, after the demonstration in parliament organised by trade unions escalated into tense confrontations with the police.

The protests were linked to ongoing disputes over economic policies, including the cost-of-living adjustment and related legislation.

Erhürman emphasised that trust is the fundamental pillar of crisis management and must be established from the outset and protected throughout the process. He stressed that if sacrifices are required, those affected must be included in decision-making, with transparency and fairness guiding the distribution of state resources.

He highlighted that inclusiveness is essential in managing crises, noting that those who will make sacrifices and those who will receive support should be determined through a participatory and transparent approach, prioritising those in the most difficult conditions. Underlining that non-violence must remain the core principle, Erhürman stated that violence cannot be justified under any circumstances.

The President also pointed to the importance of legality, proportionality and respect for human rights in the use of force by security forces.
