Erhürman signals a focused, and coordinated new phase ahead
President Tufan Erhürman issued a statement today addressing key developments on the agenda, highlighting the gravity of accumulated challenges and the need for calm, determination and collective strategy.
President Erhürman recalled that the presidential election was held on 19 October and he assumed office on 24 October, noting that almost one month of intense work had already been completed and an even busier period lies ahead.
He stated that on Thursday he will hold his first meeting with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, the first substantial contact since the 2017 Crans-Montana talks.
Stressing that many negative developments have occurred around Cyprus and in the region, he underlined the responsibility to restore a constructive atmosphere for a solution.
Erhürman emphasised the necessity of re-establishing the Turkish Cypriot people’s communication with the world, engaging with all actors they can reach, and clearly conveying both their will for a settlement and the realities on the island.
He said strengthening ties between the TRNC and Türkiye, increasing visibility and understanding of the Turkish Cypriot people within Turkish public opinion, and enhancing bilateral relations would be among the main priorities of this period.
The President also highlighted domestic goals: enabling the Turkish Cypriot people to stand firmly on their own feet, restoring pride in public institutions, ensuring merit-based governance and the rule of law, and safeguarding freedoms and equal rights.
He noted that work had already begun simultaneously across multiple areas, acknowledging that results would not appear in the short term and that public appreciation, suggestions and criticism were all welcome elements of participatory democracy.
He concluded by noting the magnitude of accumulated problems and calling for perseverance: the process ahead will require calm, patience and hard work from everyone. “As always, for our children, our youth and our people, we will work tirelessly—together,” he said.
