TC and GC parties meet in buffer zone
Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot political parties have come together in the buffer zone…
A joint statement issued after the meeting stressed that both communities face security risks stemming from a conflict they are not a party to, due to the presence of British Sovereign Base Areas on the island.
Some political parties from the TRNC and South Cyprus met at the Ledra Palace Hotel in the buffer zone in Lefkoşa, as part of regular monthly meetings organized by the Slovak Embassy in South Cyprus.
At the meeting, held upon the proposal of the host New Cyprus Party, participants exchanged views under the theme: “Geography is destiny – let us cooperate for security and solidarity against disasters.”
In the joint statement agreed upon by party representatives and leaders, it was noted that the world is going through a period marked by the devastating consequences of war, and that rising tensions once again painfully remind us that geography shapes destiny.
It was emphasized that the presence of British Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus could expose all communities on the island to security threats arising from conflicts in which they are not involved.
The statement also underlined that all communities share the island, stressing that disasters such as wars, fires, and diseases do not recognize ceasefire lines or passports, and called on all sides to enhance cooperation. It further highlighted that Cyprus’s ecosystem should be regarded as a whole.
The next meeting will be hosted by AKEL in South Cyprus on April 28.
