Üstel: Zero tolerance for violence against women
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has issued a statement on recent incidents of violence against women, including the latest femicide in which Rukiye Tunçer lost her life.
Üstel said the recent incidents had caused deep sorrow and widespread anger in society, and offered his condolences to Tunçer’s family and loved ones.
He stressed that violence against women and femicide could never be justified or accepted, adding that ensuring every woman can live in safety and protecting the right to life are among the state’s most fundamental responsibilities.
Üstel said existing protection and prevention mechanisms were being reviewed following incidents over the past month, with efforts focused on identifying shortcomings, strengthening coordination between institutions and introducing any additional measures without delay.
He said the state was fighting violence against women through the coordinated efforts of the police, judiciary, social services and all relevant institutions.
The Prime Minister added that he had been closely following the police investigation and ongoing judicial process, and said every necessary step would be taken to ensure the latest incident was fully investigated.
Üstel stressed that the priority was not only to ensure justice after violence occurs, but also to prevent violence before it happens and protect women who are at risk.
He said protective and preventive mechanisms would continue to be strengthened so that women could feel safe.
Üstel concluded by stressing that no shortcomings would be ignored and no crime would go unpunished.
“Our position on protecting women’s right to life is clear: zero tolerance for violence against women,” he said, adding that effective protection and determined action would continue to be strengthened.
