Ferry disaster inquiry gets underway

The parliamentary committee established to investigate the August 30 Girne ferry disaster has held its first meeting.

UBP MP Sunat Atun was unanimously elected chairman, while CTP MP Teberrüken Uluçay was elected deputy chairman.

The investigation committee met at the call of Parliament Speaker Ziya Öztürkler immediately following yesterday’s extraordinary session of the Republic’s Assembly.

The committee unanimously elected UBP MP Sunat Atun as chairman and CTP MP Teberrüken Uluçay as deputy chairman.

The other members are UBP MPs Resmiye Eroğlu Canaltay and Hasan Küçük, and CTP MP Fikri Toros.

The five-member committee was established by parliament to investigate the passenger ferry disaster which occurred off Girne Port on August 30.

Following the election of its chairman and deputy chairman, the committee also held an internal briefing meeting.
