Public sector unions continue their strikes and protests across the country

Unions organised in the public sector continue their strikes and protests across the country against the government’s decree with the force of law and draft laws regarding the cost of living.

Public sector unions protesting the decree regulating the cost of living once again held a demonstration in front of the Parliament throughout the day on Tuesday.

Tensions rose in the morning hours when protesters attempted to enter the Parliament.

Arguments and scuffles broke out between the police and the protesters.

President Tufan Erhürman went to the Parliament and met with the protesters, holding consultations.

Following these developments, President Tufan Erhürman held meetings first with Prime Minister Üstel and cabinet members, and then with the unions.

After the meetings at the Presidency, the National Unity Party Parliamentary Group held an evaluation meeting.

Following the meeting, Member of Parliament Hasan Küçük made a statement announcing that the decree with the force of law regarding the cost of living would be withdrawn.

On the other hand, union representatives also gathered and announced that if the withdrawal decision is not published in the official gazette, the general strike will continue.

The President of the Cyprus Turkish Civil Servants’ Union, Güven Bengihan, stated that the general strike would continue on Wednesday and that they would be in front of the Parliament at 10 am.
