PM Ünal Üstel received Journalists Society President Reşat Akar
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel met with officials from the Turkish Cypriot Journalists Society to discuss problems facing the media sector.
The meeting addressed problems in the media sector, the distribution of newspapers across the island, and difficulties related to satellite broadcasting.
Reşat Akar pointed out that rising fuel prices have seriously affected newspaper distribution, causing disruptions and making the current situation unsustainable, and highlighted the sector’s need for support.
Akar also referred to the problems faced by local television channels broadcasting via satellite, noting that the 25 percent contribution to Türksat satellite fees, which is covered by the state, has not been paid for some time, putting local broadcasters in a difficult position.
Prime Minister Üstel stated that he had taken note of the issues raised by Akar and would discuss the matter with the Minister of Finance.
He emphasized that steps would be taken to ensure newspapers reach every part of the island and to sustain satellite broadcasting.
According to a statement from the Prime Ministry, the ongoing Penal Code was also discussed during the meeting.
