Employee who kept $2,000 from customer sentenced to 9 months in prison

The Nicosia Assizes Court, presided over by Ayşen Toroslu and consisting of Senior Judge Çiğdem Güzeler and Judge Engin Atıcı, delivered its verdict, which was read by Güzeler. The judge announced that the defendant was found guilty and convicted of the charges in light of their own confession, along with the facts and evidence presented to the court.

The judge stated that on April 8, 2026, while working as a sales representative at an electronics store located on Dr. Fazıl Küçük Boulevard in Nicosia, the defendant took $2,000 received from a customer in exchange for a receipt and stole it by failing to deliver the money to the company where they were employed.

The judge noted that theft by an employee undermines the trust that must be established between employers and employees, and severely impacts working life. Emphasizing the seriousness of the “theft by employee” crime committed by the defendant, Senior Judge Güzeler pointed out that this offense carries a prison sentence of up to 7 years. The judge recorded that theft crimes are on the rise and that, in the public interest, deterrent and exemplary sentences must be handed down. Taking into account all circumstances in favor of and against the defendant, Judge Güzeler announced that they were unanimously sentenced to 9 months in prison.
