Akar: We are here for peace and stability, and we will not give up
Chairman of the Turkish Grand National Assembly’s National Defense Commission Hulusi Akar emphasized that Türkiye supports peace and stability in Cyprus, stating that its military presence on the island will continue until this is ensured.
Akar made the remarks while evaluating statements by Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides regarding the presence of Turkish troops on the island, during his appearance on the BRT program “Gündem 12.”
Arguing that the approaches of the Greek Cypriot Administration and Greece on the Cyprus issue are “detached from reality,” Akar said their public rhetoric differs from what they express in bilateral and informal meetings.
Akar stated: “Whether it is the Greek Cypriot Administration or Greece, unfortunately they adopt a selfish approach that is completely detached from conscience, reason, history, and facts. In fact, they themselves know this is not true. They openly express this in bilateral and informal meetings. However, when they appear before cameras and the press, they make claims that do not align with reality.”
Stressing that Türkiye’s stance on the Cyprus issue has not changed, Akar underlined that they support resolving problems through dialogue and diplomacy.
“We have always stood for peace. We have advocated and will continue to advocate resolving problems through dialogue and diplomatic means. There has been no change in our position. We are here for peace and stability, and we will continue to be here until this is achieved,” he said.
