President Erhürman critices attack on Yiğitler Bastion, says those involved should be held accountable
President Tufan Erhürman reported that stones and explosive materials were thrown at civilians located at Yiğitler Burcu by a group on the southern side.
The President stated that no citizens were harmed in the incident and stressed that they would closely monitor the process to be followed by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus and the Greek Cypriot leadership.
He stressed that they expected both the United Nations Peacekeeping Force and the Greek Cypriot leadership to take the necessary steps as quickly as possible and to share information with the relevant authorities.
“According to information received from our Security Forces Command, stones and explosive materials were thrown at our civilian citizens in Yiğitler Burcu by a group from the southern side. Due to its status as a buffer zone, this is an area where the United Nations Peacekeeping Force bears responsibility, and as it is also used as a route, the Greek Cypriot leadership also bears responsibility. Contact has been established both with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force and with our counterparts in the south regarding this attack. April 1 is a day when everyone can anticipate such incidents. It is not acceptable that no precautions were taken in such an area,” Erhürman said in his statement.
“We strongly condemn those who carried out the attack and expect both the United Nations Peacekeeping Force and the Greek Cypriot leadership to take the necessary steps as quickly as possible and to share information with our authorities. We will follow up to ensure that the competent authorities of the Greek Cypriot leadership urgently initiate the necessary judicial investigation and that those responsible for this attack are brought to justice,” he added.
“No citizens were harmed in the incident. I once again underline that we will closely monitor the process to be followed by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force and the Greek Cypriot leadership,” President Erhürman concluded.
