President Erhürman condemns burning of TRNC flag on the Greek Cypriot side
President Tufan Erhürman has condemned the burning of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) flag during a demonstration in South Cyprus.
Erhürman said, “Of course, I condemn this act in the strongest possible terms,” adding that the incident will certainly be on their agenda in the coming days and will be examined.
In a post on his social media account, President Tufan Erhürman condemned the burning of the TRNC flag in South Cyprus.
In his message, Erhürman wrote: “A group marching with Greek flags burned the flag of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
Although burning a flag may be intended as an insult or an attempt to demean the people who belong to it, most of the time it serves only to show that those who commit such acts are prisoners of hatred, hostility, and primitive impulses of violence. That is exactly the case here.
Naturally, I condemn this ‘act’ in the strongest possible way. But beyond that, I believe it is important to question why such behaviour was not prevented, and more importantly, to question the mentality that produces and fuels this hatred and hostility.
These issues will certainly be on our agenda in the coming days and will be examined. Let no one have any doubt about that!”
