Öztürkler warns G. Cypriot defense moves could raise regional tensions

Speaker of the Republic’s Assemb ly Ziya Öztürkler says Türkiye’s firm stance on Cyprus remains the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’s strongest guarantee.

He also warns that recent Greek Cypriot defense policies could increase tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Ziya Öztürkler has stressed that Türkiye’s united and determined policy on Cyprus continues to be the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ greatest assurance.

Speaking during a television program, Öztürkler also commented on the recently passed Criminal Procedure Amendment Law and regional developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Evaluating the Criminal Procedure Amendment Law approved by Parliament, Öztürkler said debate centered on only one article of the legislation and noted that the results would become clear in the coming period.

He recalled that the bill had completed the parliamentary process and passed unanimously through committee, adding that developments would continue to be monitored closely and reassessed if necessary.

Öztürkler emphasized that Ankara’s unwavering position on Cyprus has once again been demonstrated through statements by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli, and other Turkish state institutions.

Describing Cyprus as a “National Cause,” Öztürkler said Türkiye’s political, economic, military, and diplomatic support remains critically important for the TRNC.

He stated that the Turkish Cypriot people view Türkiye’s backing not only as military deterrence, but also as a key source of economic development and international visibility.

Öztürkler also criticized recent statements by Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides regarding expanding defense capabilities and increasing deterrence.

He warned that such policies risk triggering a new arms race on the island and could further complicate efforts toward peace and stability.

Commenting on growing cooperation between France, Israel, Greece, and the Greek Cypriot Administration in the Eastern Mediterranean, Öztürkler argued that these alliances are moving the region away from being a zone of peace.

Reaffirming support for a two-state solution, Öztürkler said the TRNC would continue defending its sovereign equality and legitimate rights with Türkiye’s full support.
