UNFICYP condemns buffer zone incident in Lefkoşa

The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) has condemned the incident in the buffer zone in Lefkoşa, where individuals threw rocks and fireworks toward civilians standing at Yiğitler Burcu (bastion), warning that such acts threaten public safety and stability.

UNFICYP stated that the incident took place in the civil-use area of the UN buffer zone on Markou Drakou Street in South Lefkoşa, where a group of individuals allegedly targeted civilians in a park on Yiğitler Burcu (bastion) by throwing rocks and fireworks toward the north.

The peacekeeping force emphasised that such acts of violence are unacceptable and pose a risk to public safety and stability on the island.

UNFICYP confirmed that it immediately contacted the relevant authorities on both sides following the incident, to monitor developments and support efforts to establish the facts through a thorough investigation.

Reiterating its call for restraint, UNFICYP stressed the importance of respecting the rule of law and urged all parties and individuals to refrain from any actions that could undermine peace and security on the island.
