New Weather Forecasting Center inaugurated

The Meteorology Department’s new Weather Forecasting Center in Lefkoşa has been officially inaugurated.

Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı said efforts are underway both to increase the number of staff at the Meteorology Department and to enhance its technical equipment.

The Meteorology Department’s new Weather Forecasting Center in Lefkoşa was officially opened with a ceremony.

Speaking at the opening, Meteorology Department Director Sinan Güneş said the department continues to invest in its infrastructure and has carried out investments totaling nearly 70 million TL over the past two years.

Güneş also noted that an early warning system project, developed by the President of the Chamber of Meteorological Engineers Mustafa Altunç, will soon be implemented for employees working at the Weather Forecasting Center, describing it as a significant development in the field of meteorology.

Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı stated that efforts are ongoing both to increase the department’s personnel numbers and to strengthen its technical equipment.

Arıklı explained that the new Weather Forecasting Center building was purchased from scratch and brought to its current state through the department’s own resources as well as the support of sponsors.

He also said that discussions had been held with the Ministry of Finance regarding increasing staff numbers.

In his speech, Arıklı thanked the sponsors who contributed to the construction of the building and said, “This center is one of the best examples of public–private partnership.”

Mayor of Gönyeli–Alayköy Municipality, Hüseyin Amcaoğlu, stated that two meteorological stations had been provided to Gönyeli and Alayköy through cooperation between the Meteorology Department, the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation, and the Prime Ministry’s EU Coordination Center.

Amcaoğlu added that the data obtained from these stations helps the municipality carry out more accurate urban planning.

Following the speeches, plaques were presented to those who contributed to the construction of the center.

The facility was then officially opened, and attendees toured the building while receiving information from technical staff.
